Ftal
Treatment
Properly
selected, some ftal anomalies require intervention before birth to improve
perinatal survival and the child's quality of life.
The nature of intervention may be:
Medical
- ftal
hyperthyroidism
- congenital
adrenal hyperplasia
- hematological
disorders
- infections
Surgical
- lung malformations/cysts
- congenital
diaphragmatic hernia
- pleural
effusion
- urinary
tract obstruction
- sacrococcygeal
teratoma
- ascitis
- twin-to-twin
transfusion syndrome
- TRAP sequence
in monozygotic twins
- multiftal
reduction/selective termination
Future advancement
in both knowledge and technology will lead to many more malformations
being amenable to correction.
Perinatal
Treatment
In a specialized
centre most ftal malformations can be treated after birth. A highly specialized
transport team is available to transfer newborns from the birth centre
to The Montreal Children's Hospital. In some cases, the timing, mode and/or
site of delivery may have to be carefully planned in order to improve
outcome.
Some examples
are:
- abdominal
wall defects (omphalocele, gastroschisis)
- neural
tube defects
- cardiac
defects
- Some anomalies
may evolve in utero and need special intrapartum management.
For instance:
- teratomas
(cervical, sacrococcygeal)
- cystic
hygroma
- skeletal
dysplasia
- congenital
heart defects

- after
pre/postnatal treatment of baby with congenitial malformations Genetic
counsellors ensure continuity of care.
Termination
of Pregnancy
Our centres
provide the services for termination of pregnancy for medical reasons
during the first or second trimester, if these procedures are not available
in your hospital.
Embryoftopathology
Our consultants
in pathology specializing in ftal malformation provide a precise diagnostis
of ftal anomalies.
Proper diagnosis of ftal malformation is essential to the provision of
accurate risks of recurrence and proper future pregnancy management.
